Gender-Inclusive Forest Policies for Sustainable Development
Forests play a vital role in sustaining ecosystems, livelihoods, and climate balance. However, the management and governance of forests have historically overlooked the distinct roles, needs, and contributions of women and marginalized genders. Gender-inclusive forest policies are essential for achieving sustainable development, as they ensure that all stakeholders have equal access to decision-making, resources, and benefits.
Women, especially in rural and indigenous communities, are often the primary users and caretakers of forest resources. They gather food, medicinal plants, fuelwood, and contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation. Despite this, they frequently face barriers in accessing land rights, participating in forest governance, and benefiting from forest-based economies.
By integrating gender perspectives into forest policies, governments and organizations can promote equity, strengthen community resilience, and improve conservation outcomes. This includes:
- Ensuring equal participation in policy-making processes
- Recognizing customary rights and knowledge of women and marginalized groups
- Providing capacity-building and financial support tailored to diverse needs
- Addressing discriminatory laws and practices
Gender-inclusive forest policies not only empower communities but also enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of forest management. As we aim toward the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), embracing inclusive approaches is not optional—it is essential.
