Neftaly Illustrating Seasonal Proverbs With Street Art

Turning Walls Into Wisdom, Seasons Into Stories

Neftaly’s “Illustrating Seasonal Proverbs with Street Art” is a vibrant public arts initiative that brings African proverbs to life through large-scale murals and street art installations—transforming everyday walls into canvases of culture, language, and ancestral knowledge.

Each season carries its own lessons in African tradition: the patience of planting, the joy of harvest, the reflection of winter, and the renewal of spring. These moments have long been captured in powerful, poetic proverbs passed down through generations. Neftaly invites communities and artists to celebrate this oral wisdom by painting it boldly across cities, villages, and schools—one wall, one proverb, one season at a time.

    Project Vision

    • Celebrate African languages and indigenous knowledge systems
    • Connect communities to the rhythm of the seasons through visual art
    • Preserve and promote proverbs as cultural treasures
    • Beautify and empower public spaces with meaning and story
    • Support local artists and storytellers in reimagining public space

    How It Works

    1. Seasonal Proverbs Are Selected
In collaboration with elders, language experts, and cultural historians, Neftaly collects and curates proverbs tied to each season’s wisdom—from various African languages and regions.
    2. Artists Are Commissioned Locally
Visual artists, muralists, and illustrators are invited to interpret selected proverbs through street art, working with communities to co-create bold, educational, and meaningful visuals.
    3. Community Engagement and Workshops
Mural creation includes storytelling circles, proverb interpretation sessions, and painting workshops involving local youth and residents.
    4. Public Launches and Documentation
Each mural is launched with a mini-celebration and documented digitally to create an online archive of proverb-inspired street art.

    Examples of Seasonal Proverbs

    • Summer: “When the sun is shining, repair your roof.” – A lesson in preparation and foresight.
    • Autumn: “A tree is known by its fruit.” – A reminder that actions speak louder than words.
    • Winter: “Even the best cooking pot will not produce food.” – A reflection on patience and effort.
    • Spring: “Rain does not fall on one roof alone.” – A teaching about shared experiences and unity.

    Why It Matters

    • Revives cultural expression in everyday environments
    • Inspires young people to take pride in indigenous languages
    • Reclaims public space as a canvas for education and beauty
