Documenting Heritage. Celebrating Identity. Honoring Generations.
At Neftaly, we believe that tradition is a living legacy. Through our initiative, Using Film to Preserve Birth and Marriage Rituals, we are capturing, archiving, and sharing the rich cultural practices that mark the most sacred moments of human life—birth and marriage.
Across Africa and beyond, these rituals carry deep meaning, expressing values of community, ancestry, spirituality, and identity. But as modern lifestyles evolve and globalization influences culture, many of these rituals are at risk of being forgotten. Neftaly uses the power of film to ensure they are not.
What the Project Does
Through this initiative, Neftaly works with communities, elders, cultural leaders, and families to:
- Film Traditional Rituals: Capture authentic birth and marriage ceremonies across diverse cultures and regions with full respect for consent, context, and cultural sensitivity.
- Preserve Oral Histories: Record the stories, meanings, songs, symbols, and teachings behind each ritual, directly from the voices of those who practice them.
- Create Educational Content: Produce short films, documentaries, and digital exhibits that can be used in schools, cultural institutions, and homes.
- Build a Digital Archive: Store and protect these films in a publicly accessible online platform, creating a living cultural library for future generations.
Why This Matters
- Cultural Preservation: Safeguards intangible heritage that is often passed down orally and at risk of disappearing.
- Intergenerational Learning: Connects youth with the wisdom and practices of their ancestors in relatable, visual ways.
- Community Empowerment: Celebrates local knowledge and gives communities the opportunity to define and document their own narratives.
- Inclusive Storytelling: Highlights diverse customs from rural and urban communities, different ethnic groups, and various spiritual traditions.
Key Focus Areas
- Birth Rituals: Ceremonies surrounding naming, blessings, ancestor acknowledgment, and rites of protection and transition.
- Marriage Rituals: Traditional weddings, dowry processes, family negotiations, symbolic clothing, music, dance, and food.
- Modern vs. Traditional Practices: Exploring how rituals evolve in modern settings while maintaining cultural essence.
How We Work
- Community-Led Filmmaking: Local filmmakers and cultural facilitators lead production to ensure authenticity and cultural accuracy.
- Consent & Ethics: All participants give informed consent, and sensitive cultural practices are filmed with deep respect and discretion.
