The social and economic value of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is substantial, particularly for local communities. NTFPs provide livelihoods, cultural significance, and food security, while also generating income, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to poverty reduction and national GDP.
Some examples of NTFPs include medicinal plants, fruits and nuts, resins and gums, and wild edibles. However, there are challenges to be addressed, such as ensuring sustainable harvesting practices, improving market access, developing certification and regulatory frameworks, and building the capacity of local communities to manage and benefit from NTFPs.
By promoting sustainable NTFP management and trade, we can help support local livelihoods, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable forest management.
